LAGOS — The aspiring gubernatorial candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Lagos State, Hon. Naheem Balogun, received a hero’s welcome from scores of enthusiastic supporters and party faithful as he returned to Lagos following a short trip to the United States.
Supporters, many waving party banners and chanting solidarity songs, thronged the arrival area to express their unwavering loyalty to the politician amid growing uncertainty surrounding the party’s governorship ticket.
Addressing the jubilant crowd, Balogun struck a confident tone, insisting that he remains the duly recognised candidate of the party and dismissing widespread rumours suggesting that nomination forms had been issued to another aspirant.
“I urge all our supporters not to be distracted by rumours and misinformation. Remain calm, focused and steadfast. The mandate given to us by party members cannot be taken away through speculation and propaganda,” he declared.
The NDC has in recent weeks been embroiled in internal tensions over the outcome of its gubernatorial primary election, with competing claims and allegations threatening to deepen divisions within the party. However, Balogun reassured his supporters that he remains committed to pursuing the matter through legitimate party processes while protecting the interests of those who have stood by him.
He thanked party members across the state’s local government areas for their continued support and sacrifices, describing their commitment as the foundation of the movement he represents.
“I will continue to protect the interests of our supporters and the NDC faithful. I will not take any decision affecting our collective future without consulting stakeholders across Lagos State. This project belongs to the people, and together we will determine its direction,” Balogun said.
He called on party members to remain united and avoid actions capable of weakening the party ahead of future political contests.
Political observers say Balogun’s return and the massive reception organised by supporters underscore his enduring influence within sections of the NDC grassroots structure in Lagos. The public show of support is also expected to intensify discussions over the party’s next steps as members await clarity on the governorship ticket.
Despite the uncertainty, supporters at the reception maintained that their confidence in Balogun remains unshaken, expressing optimism that the will of party members would ultimately prevail.
For many of those gathered to welcome him home, the message was unmistakable: their faith in Naheem Balogun’s leadership remains intact, and they are prepared to stand with him as the unfolding political drama within the NDC continues.
